Matinee Trots
Buller Owners’ and Breeders’ Association held a successful matinee meeting on Saturday afternoon at Patterson’s Park. Tnere was a fair attendance, r , x , Mr. J. Fairbairn (starter) got the fields away without any trouble. The track was in good condition and the races were run two carts out from the inside. Some twenty-two horses took part. Results are as follows: — Race One: One mile and a-quar-ter.—Scotch Drift, 48yds. (L. Pascoe) 1; Loyal Volo, scr. (A. Marr) 2; Gezera, scr. (E. Hollis) 3. Won by half a length; two lengths. Time 3.1. Also started: Jack’s Pride (C. White), Dale Lass (C. Walsh), Ladyship (G. Mason), Scotty (Mclntyre). After the field had settled down Loyal Volo showed the way to Gezera and Ladyship, with Dale Lass and Jack’s Pride following, and Scotch Drift making up ground. Loyal Volo led past the stand and along the back, with Scotch Drift moving around the field to take the lead turning into the straight. With half a furlong to run, it was Scotch Drift with Loyal Volo on the inside and Gezera challenging on the outer, but Scotch Drift hung on to win by half a length from Loyal Volo and Gezera in third place. Then came Dale Lass, Jack’s Pride and Scotty tailed off. ■ Race Two: One mile and a-half — Wynleaf, 24yds. (K. Powell) 1; Sarsfield, 24, (C. Walsh) 2; Red Queen, 24 (J. Higgins) 3. Won by two lengths; three. Also started: Adelma (F 1 . Scott), Laurene Gratten (L. Pascoe), Motto, 60 yds. (O. Levy). Laurine Gratten led from Adelma over the first half-mile, with Red Queen, Sarsfield, Wynleaf and Motto tailing off. There was no change down the back. Approaching the three furlongs, Sarsfield took the lead from Adelma, Red Queen ana Laurine Gratten dropped back and Wynleaf showed up on the outside. In the run home, Wynleaf won by two lengths from Sarsfield, with Red Queen close up third, and then came Adelma, Laurine Gratten and Motto. Time 3.38. , „ Race Three: Six furlongs (Gallopers). —Cricket Field (R. Frame) 1; Chatmoney (K. Powell) 2; Chianti (E Walsh) 3; Early Night (R. Powley) 4. Also started: Glenvey (K. Rae). The horses started from the barrier at the stalls. . Cricket Field was the first out and led throughout, with Chatmoney in second place and Chianti third. Early Night came next and Glenvey tailed off. Time 1.19. Race Four: One and a-quarter miles. —Seapirate, scr. (C. Walsh) 1; Scotch Drift, 60 (L. Pascoe) 2; Jack’s Pride, scr. (C. White) 3. Also started: Royal Bar (J. Roche), Adelma, scr. (F. Scott) and Scotty (Mclntyre). Royal Bar and Adelma were the first out from Scotty. ‘ Seapirate and Jack’s Pride went into a tangle going past the stand. Along the back the position was the same, with Seapirate improving his position and Scotty drifting back and Jack’s Pride started to move, and Scotch Drift, who had made up his handicap, showed up. In a great battle, Seapirate beat Scotch Drift by a small margin, with Jack’s Pride in third. It was a good effort by Scotch Drift, who ran the distance in 2.55 4-5. Seapirate’s time was 3min. Two gallopers from T. Smith’s stable gave an exhibition over six furlongs. Velvet Slipper (T. Smith) finished in front of Transfusionist (R. Frame).
