Sea Elephants May Provide Cosmetics

Cosmetics made from sea elephants captured in the Antarctic may soon be an exclusive fashion for Australian women. The sea elephants may also, be included in margarine. First experiments to see if sea elephant oil is suitable for cosmetics and edible purposes will begin in the Defence Research and Industrial Laboratory of the Australian Department of Supply and Development, in Melbourne, during this month. Scientists have taken delivery of two gallons of liver oil and blubber collected by members of the Australian Antarctic Expedition on Macquarie Island. Their first problem will be to deodorise and harden the oil. The blubber will be kept on ice until experimental arrangements have been completed.—N.Z.P.A. — Reuter.
