One of the worst race smashes in years occurred at the Moonee Valley races on Saturday when five runners fell in the first division of the Morang Handicap. A jockey, E. Preston, broke his left leg, and was rushed to hospital; and A. Breasley, who was injured in the back, was not permitted to ride again on the day. A promising West Australian filly, Barlowerie, died instantly of a broken neck. The crash occurred about three and a-half furlongs from home ' at the spot where Keith Voitre was killed in September, 1938. Preston’s mount, Star of The East, fell first, and the whole field appeared to crash into her. In a moment, the course was strewn with fallen horses and riders. ■ The favourite. Trellis, who was making a forward move at the time, was among the casualties, and the placings went to three outsiders, —
Lady Luba 1; Jenny Tressady 2; and Mount Beauty 3. Attempts to Get At Crack Three-year-old In Sydney Stable (Rec. 9.5). SYDNEY, August 29.
