English Channel Storm Damage

LONDON, August 9. Fruit and crop damage caused by the week-end storm amounts to thousands of pounds throughout Britain. Farmlands were flooded in manv places. Lifeboats are still searching the Channel for the two ships reported in distress. After yesterday’s 70-miles-an-hour gale had "blown down notices warning bathers not to use a section of the beach off Sandown, Isle of Wight, Dr. Kenneth Mackie saw his 12-year-old son being carried out to sea. A woman bather brought !ne boy ashore, but Dr. Mackie, in. trying to help his son. was drowned. Two swimmers who went to help Dr. Mackie were also drowned, and seven others were given first aid after unsuccessful rescue attempts.
