BOXING

P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 9. A twelve-rounds professional bout between Laurie Petersen, Queensland, and Clarrie Gordon, of Auckland, provided the best contest seen in Christchurch for many years. The result was a draw—a referee’s decisions, after the judges had disagreed. Petersen again proved himself a masterly boxer, and he nullified many of Gordons attacks by clever footwork and weaving. Gordon continually carried the fight to his opponent, and, although he was showing signs of distress in the tenth and eleventh rounds, he came back with a sustained attack in the final. Possibly it was this round that gave him a draw. Gordon was continually on the look-out for a knock-out, and his continual boring-in did not give Petersen much chance to use his left with the same effect as against Slavin and Cruichshanks. Gordon and Petersen will meet in a return bout at Auckland in two weeks’ time.
