Mr J. Franklin left by air yesterday morning for Nelson. A Diploma in elocution has been gained by Miss P. Kiely, of Greymouth. The examination was held at Hokitika last Thursday. Mr G. B. Fiveash has been appointed official handicapper for the 1948 season by the West Coast Athletic, Cycling and Axemen’s Union. Next month Brigadier Norman Gwatkin, Assistant Controller of the Lord Chamberlain’s Office, is expected in New Zealand to finalise the Royal tour itinerary. Messrs C. G. Harvey and D. J. Tucker, of Greymouth, have been admitted to the New Zealand Society of Accountants with the statis of Associated Registered Accountant (A.R.A.N.Z.). President Truman nominated Mr Maurice J. Tobin as Secretary of Labour to succeed Mr Lewis Schwellenbach, who died on June 10. Mr John Tobin is a former Mayor of Boston. A report cabled from London that Mr J. Arthur Rank, the British film producer, intended to visit New Zealand this year is described as premature in a cablegram received today by Kerridge Theatres Ltd., from Mr Rank. He did intend to visit New Zealand, Mt Rank stated, but there was “absolutely no prospect” of a visit this year because of other commitments.
