JAPAN’S NEW ROLE AS BARRIER TO COMMUNISM
Object Of Rehabilitation (Rec. 11.5) NEW YORK, Aug. 8 The Japanese public are now oemg opemy mio/med that the United States seeks the rehabilitation ot Japan so as to make that country “a protective wan” against the spread of Communism in Asia. I'his is according to a survey by the Civil Information and Education Section of the Alnea 1-ieaaquarcers in tokio. Reporting this, a New York Times Tokio correspondent, Mr Linaesay i-’arrott, says: “The survey reveals that the possibilities of war between tne Umtea States and Russia are now freely discussed, and that the interpretation ot the Japanese plans for the reconstruction of Japan as a measure to' curb tke Soviet expansion is given with some irequency. •“l ne survey covers articles in fifteen publications with a circulation close to two millions, and it is part of a periodical survey by the Information section oi tne Japanese media’ oi expression. "One interesting point disclosed,” says Mr Parrott, "is that some Japanese foreign affairs experts apparently do not expect a long lite for a provision of the new American-writ ten Japanese Constitution, renounces "lor ever” the maintenance of armed forces. An editorial in the “Keizai Shimpo” magazine says: “The United States Government intends to complete the rehabilitation of Japan at the earliest possmie moment, and to promote an independent Japan capable of protecting herself. This means that the United States wishes to make Japan a barrier in the Pacific against the advancing peril of totalitarian Russia.
