FIFTY-ONE DEAD IN SHANGHAI FIRE
(Rec. 7.40) SHANGHAI, Aug. 9 (Reuters —N.Z.P.A.) Fifty-one workers are dead, while thirty-nine have been seriously injured as a result of a fire which destroyed a Chinese shirt factory here. The Municipal Fire Brigade believes the fire was caused by lightning striking the switchboards controlling the ironing tables and machines. Many of the one hundred and twenty workers who were trapped in the bulding jumped to safety from the upper floors.
