WATAROA NOTES
[Our own Correspondent] Mrs J. H. Commons, of Wataroa, had the misfortune to break her ankle through slipping on a polished carpet. She was attended by Dr Hunt, and was later admitted to the Westland Hospital. Mrs Commons, who is a popular resident has the sympathy of a wide circle of friends. Miss Thelma Reid, who has been on a holiday, has returned to Wataroa. Mrs A. Douglas and Master K. Douglas have been visiting Christchurch for the racing carnival. Mr Jack Nisson is among the local residents visiting Christchurch for the races. Mr and Mrs F. M. Butler are at present on a visit to Christchurch. Mr Alex Gunn, of Wataroa, has been a recent visitor to Christchurch. Two members of the Salvation Army have been making their annual collection in South Westland for the Army’s orphanage, and the deserving cause has met with general support. Work on a road deviation beyond Franz Josef Hostel is progressing well, and should be completed in about two months’ time. The marriage of Mr Arthur Condon, youngest son of Mr and Mrs Thos. ’ Condon, of Tatare, is to take place at Greymouth on August 24. Mr J. Shivas passed through Wataroa last week on his usual trip south to Jacob’s River.. It is to be hoped that work on the Ilaast Pass Road may soon be extended, as it will be a great impetus for the tourist traffic when travellers to the glaciers are able to continue southwards of Parangi over the pass to Otago district.
