CRICKET Six Australians Cheaply Dismissed by Lancashire Slow Left-hander
(Rec. 9.45). LONDON, Aug. 8. An unassuming Lancashire leftarm slow bowler, Bill Roberts, gave the Australians a rude shock in the first innings of the second game against Lancashire at Old Trafford on Saturday. He broke a stalwart opening stand by Barnes and Morris at 123. He carried on bowling unchanged to the drawing of stumps, when he had taken six for 67. Australia finished the day with seven for 272.
Bradman, winning the toss, decided to bat on a wicket which apipeared to be slow and easy. But Roberts coaxed unexpected fire from the wicket. H? frequently baffled and finally dismissed “Bradman, after the Australian captain had spent an uncomfortable 73 minutes at the wicket for 28 runs. Roberts kept at his task with commendable zeal, but a combination of his flagging strength and of lan Johnson’s aiid Tallon's aggressiveness towards the end of the day enabled the Australians to take the total to respectable proportions. lan Johnson scored 35 not out. It was an imaginative innings at a time when the rest of the Australian wickets could have fallen suddenly if the spirit of aggression had not been shown.
