General Items

A new police station is to be erected in the township of Millerton, tenders for which close next Thursday. Mr T. S. Maunsell, S.M., decided to adjourn the hearing of charges against the licences of the City and Cosmopolitan Hotels in Westport of selling liquor in measures of less than the full standard measure at prices not in conformity with the maximum price. Mr T. Craig (counsel for the Cosmopolitan Hotel licensee) opposed an application by Mr H. Maitland (for the Price Tribunal) to adjourn the cases. The Magistrate, granting the application, said Mr A. A. McLachlan, S.M., had dismissed similar charges this week at Greymouth, and if that decision were reversed on appeal, he (Mr Maunsell) might be in a difficult position if he followed the Greymouth decision. If there were no appeal against the Greymouth decision, the Westport charges might be withdrawn.
