Smokers and drinkers together paid 58 per cent, of Australia’s total customs and excise -revenue for the last fm o?t Cl of the'total of £118,021,000 collected, the smokers paid £32,773,000, and the drinkers paid £34,768,000. In the year 1938-39 the smokers paid 22 per cent, or £10,903,000 and the drinkers had 16 per cent., or £27,984 000. (correction to follow). Cabinet Ministers said that reductions in the excise on beer and cigarettes had not been mentioned during the Cabinet discussions on the coming budget.
