Co-op. Shop's Financial Difficulty Cited by Nationalist M.P.

P.A. WELLINGTON. August 5. At question time in the House of Representatives to-day, Mr W. H. Gillespie (Nat., Huruniii) gave notice to ask the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Hon. Mr Nordmeyer) if the Government was aware that a consumer co-operative in Wellington, registered under the name of the Wellington Citizens’ Co-operative Society, Ltd., and having shop premises in the Wellington Trades Hall, had got into financial difficulties. Mr Gillespie also asked whether, in view of the Government’s sponsorship of consumer co-operatives in the Hutt Valley, and other places, the Government would investigate the reasons for the failure of this particular cooperative with a view, firstly, to introducing legislation to protect shareholders in such concerns, and secondly, to warn the public of the possible pitfalls in such undertakings.
