YUGOSLAV CHARGES AGAINST THE WEST OVER TRIESTE
Backed by Soviet at U.N.O. Security Council
(Rec. 9.45). NEW YORK, Aug. 4. In spite of the recent attacks by the Cominform on Marshal Tito. Yugoslav leader, both the Soviet and the Ukraine to-day backed Yugoslavia in its fight with the West over Trieste. Yugoslavia claimed that the U.N.O. Security Council, and Britain and the United States had violated the Italian Peace Treaty, and that the Western Powers were trying to make Trieste an Italian province. Mr Phillip Jessup (United States), and Sir A. Cadogan (Britain) replied that Yugoslavia had no foundation for these charges. They added that they were surprised that these charges should come from a Government which, in administering its zone of Trieste, had paid no heed to its international obligations. The Council adjourned without making a decision on Yugoslavia’s complaint.EGYPT’S CLAIM ON SUEZ CANAL (Rec. 10.10). LONDON, Aug. 5. Reuter’s correspondent at Paris says: The French Foreign Office spokesman said that France has protested to Egypt over Egypt’s claim to exercise the right to inspect all ships passing through the Suez Canal. The French protest rejected Egypts view that she is entitled, by the events in Palestine, to the right of inspection now as during time of war. France considers that there is no state of war in Palestine, and that Egypt has not been recognised as a co-belligerent.
