Young Men Jailed for Five Years for Brutal Robbery

P.A. AUCKLAND. August 5. A sentence of five years’ imprisonment was passed on two men who beat up and robbed a taxi driver at Orakei, on May 25. The prisoners were Keith Victor Jeffries, tged 24; and William Edward Pratt, aged 25. They also robbed the taxi driver. Clarence John Williams, of his watch, and of £4 8s in money. “The crime was callous, calculated, and brutal”, said Mr Justice Finlay. “Taxi-men are particularly exposed to this sort of danger, and they are entitled to be able to go about thenbusiness in safety. Only severe punishment will satisfy the public conscience. Violence will not be tolerated in Auckland”. For converting a taxi, each was convicted and discharged.
