THE TURF SOUTH RIDING WINS G.N. HURDLES IN PHOTO FINISH
AUCKLAND, June 5. The Auckland Racing Club’s winter carnival was opened at Ellerslie to-day. The track was heavy and the weather overcast. In a brilliant finish, a photo' decided in favour of South Riding by a nose from the favourite, C'orineus. in the Great Northern‘Hurdles. They jumped the last fence brilliantly, and fought out the issue head and head all the way down the home stretch. Victory Song attempted to lead all the way, but was ai beaten horse three furlongs from' home, where Boolamskee was under pressure, Corineus making up ground, and Ernada. the only other bright prospect of winning, ruining his chance by a faulty jump at the three furlong pole. Good Armour was running on strongly in fourth place, 'and thus enhanced his chance for the Great Northern teeplechase on Monday. Boolamskee was always one of the first four or five, and ultimately finished fifth. Victory Song, a very tired horse, was sixth, and then came Hippodrome and Foxstar. Contact fell at the first fence, Vassilikos six furlongs from home, and Montello de Oro - at the second last hurdle, a Results: — '
