AGA KHAN’S FOURTH SUCCESS IN ENGLISH DERBY

(Rcc. 11.0). LONDON, June 5. The Derby resulted:— My Love (Johnstone) 1; Royal Drake (Doyasbere) 2; Noor (Weston) 3. Won by one and a-half lengths; four lengths. Thirty-two started. Time: 2.40.

Ojeddah was the first away, but after a furlong, Henley-in-Arden led from Ottoman, Luefalls, and Valignus, with Tarake last. Stormie went to the front at the top of the hill, followed by Henley-in-Arden, Speciality, Ottoman, and Ojeddah. Stormie and Royal Drake led down the hill, and at Tattenham Corner. This pair were followed by Ojeddah, Ottoman, Straight Play,- Black Tarauin, The Cobbler, Julian and Mybabu. Two furlongs from home, My Love began to move up on the outside, and one furlong from home, My Love and Noor were gaining ground fast behind Royal Drake, Ojeddah and Mybabu. A hundred yards from the post, My Love went to the front and won convincingly. Mybabu was fourth. More than one million witnessed the race. My Love’s victory gave the Aga Khan his fourth success in the race. The Aga Khan also owns the third horse, Noor. All night campers and motorists who slept in cars on Epsom Downs secured good positions for the Derby —the richest in its history of 168 previous events. The stakes totalled £15.880, and the winner took £13,059. The King and Queen, Princess Elizabeth, and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived two hours before the Derby started.

Disqualification for Wagering Upheld

P.A. WELLINGTON, June 4. The appeal of E. L. Healy, of Wanganui, against the decision of® the Wanganui District Committee in. disqualifying him for six months as from May 4, 1948, was heard by Conference Appeal Judges to-day. After hearing evidence, the judges dismissed the appeal, and confirmed the decision of the Wanganui District Committee. The appeal deposit was ordered to be forfeited. The appeal judges were Messrs Macfarlane Laing, C. H. Mitchell and J. Jameson. Healy was disqualified by the District Committee for alleged corrupt practice under Rule 338 (1) (E) of the Rules of Racing, which deals with laying or accepting a wager to be determined by the amount of dividend paid by the totalisator.
