The Oil Fuel Controller has directed petrol retailers to supply petrol to farmers for farming purposes on Saturdays and Sundays, provided the usual entries are made in the returns of week-end sales.

Petrol coupons numbered 10, 11 and 12, : which are not used in June, will be available in July. The present system, allowing one month’s unused coupons to be used in the following month, will be continued in July, but no information is available about the new coupon issue or the petrol allowance after July.

“If someone had taken a little more care, all these accidents could have been avoided,” said the Minister of Transport, Hon. F. Hackett,, commenting yesterday on the number of fatal road accidents. “During the month of May the death toll on our roads was fourteen, which, while showing a reduction over the same period last year, was far too high,” he said. “Four pedestrians were killed when struck down by motor vehicles, four cyclists received fatal injuries, and three passengers and a driver died as the result of accidents,, while two motor-cyclists also ■ were killed.”—P.A.

Following the West Coast Federated Farmers’ annual conference at Westport, the services of past presidents of the Federation and its predecessor, the Farmers’ Union, and other workers on behalf of district farming organisations, were recognised. The presentations were made by the president of the Auckland organisation, Mr Scott-Davidson, who is also a member of the Dominion Council. He congratulated the recipients on their activities. The following members received certificates: Messrs W. Clayton (Ahaura), H. G. Carter (Kanaka), J. Mulcare (Ngahere). W. Fisher i(Nelson Creek), P. T. O’Regan (Inangahua), W. Vallance (Rotomanu), and H. D. Beskett (Hohonu). It was also decided to forward a certificate to Mr D. Jellie, of Arahura.
