BOOLAMSKEE IN ORDER FOR NORTHERN HURDLES

Although most would have preferred to have seen Boolamskee have had a race over fences before tackling the Great Northern Hurdles, he will lose no friends thereby, as he has previously been successful over hurdles after being restricted to flat racing in preparing for Jumping events. Such a grand stayer, and speedy gelding will find the 21 miles of the big race to his liking, and as last year’s Grand National Hurdles winner, should prove one of the most difficult to beat at Ellerslie today. Corineus, a winner at Waikato in his last start, and pre-post favourite, has a lot of ability. Last year’s winner, Hunting Mac is also in the field. He raced well on the flat recently, and his connections expect him to make a bold bid again this year. Prize Ring and Foxstar can both jump and stay, while Hippodrome won very easily at his last attempt. The Ringmaster gelding is? at home in bad ground and looks sure to be one of the favourites. Good Armour will be running on when most of the others will have had enough. Some say he has an excellent chance of completing the big double. Of those near the bottom of the handicap, the best may be Montello d’Oro, South Riding and Victory Song. A hard race to win, the Great Northern Hurdles should prove no exception on this occasion. Perhaps the winner may come from Boolamskee, Corineus, Foxstar and Hippodrome. Fields, as usual, are large for the opning day of the Auckland Club’s winter fixture, the four flat events having to be run in divisions. The track will be soft. Interest in Morocco: Interest centred in the appearance of Morocco, who won with the greatest, of ease at Te Rapa last Saturday. - The “flying grey” ridden by J. Dooley, was sent over three ‘hurdles but he did not have much pace on. „ Except for oeing a bit slow over the second fence he jumped well and will be one of the favourites for the Penrose Hurdles. He is by Theio from the Hunting Song mare Arab Song and is a half-broth-er to good jumpers in Arabic nnd Arabian Night. The much-improved hurdler, The Fake, was another to give a pleasing display during the week, when ridden by his usual 'jockey, Claude Sargent, he jumped boldly. The Baffles gelding, another to drop out of the big hurdles to take on the easier class, is in solid condition right now. Cornwall Plandicap candidates were the centre of interest at Takanini. Tamaiti Kino worked in fine style to shade Double Chance, one of the ruling favourites, over a mile in

1.47 2-5. Double Chance, who went satisfactorily, will probably carry 51b to 61b overweight on Saturday to have the services of W. R. Hooton.

Pimlico, who has been accepted for in the Hunt Club Hurdles in preference to the big hurdles, was paired with Skywriter, and the pair jumped with dash to finish on terms. Pimlico, by Lang Bian from Penny Farthing, is a typical mud horse, on the small side but very solid. Skywriter is a promising maiden jumper by Rhodes Scholar from Rock Dove, and like Pimlico and Morocco, is trained by A. Meikle at Hastings. Sylis, another Cornwall favourite, sprinted away from the Great Northen Steeples favourite, Good Armour to complete a mile in 1.51 3-5 after the pace had been slow. Foxfable was too good for Ruling Master over a mile, the last seven in 1.36, while White Blaze was never off the hjt over a mile and a half, the last mile in 1.53.

At Te Rapa, where conditions were very heavy, Foxstar revelled in the going to finish on terms with Jon Rosa over a circuit in 2.21, while Air Port was shading Merriful and Forest Glen in 2.22.

Merriful has been causing his trainer, Mrs E. M. Sloane, some anxiety as there are still signs of soreness apparent, although he appeared to hit out with customary freedom in training recently. All going well he will contest the Great Northern Steeplechase, but it will depend on the progress he makes in the interim.

Forest Glen never looked better than at present. He was third in the Great Northern Stleeplechase last year and promises to give another solid account of himself on this occasion. ELLERSLIE - SCRATCHINGS P.A. AUCKLAND. June 4. Ellerslie scratchings for to-day were :— Jervois Handicap: Talypont at 9.55 a.m. Penrose Hurdles: Incitatus aft 2.0 p.m. Great Northern Hurdles: Prize Ring, and British Mint at 2 p.m. Hunt Club Hurdles: Kenneth at 12.5 p.m. Roman Ned was withdrawn from the Great Northern Steeplechase at 11.50 a.m. and British Mint at 2 p.m.
