Hastings Car Collision Kills Woman and Injures Four People

HASTINGS, June 4. Last evening at 8.30 Mrs E. R. Tacon, of Riverslea Road, South Hastings, mother of Wing Commander W. Tacon, commander of the King’s Flight, and the late Mr John Tacon, who was lost on a ti>ght to Taupo last year, was killed in a motor collision, and foui' others were injured. It occurred on the highway three miles south of Hastings, at the intersection of Longlands Road and the Main South road. Mr Geo. Taaffe (Hastings) was driving alone towards Hastings. The other car, in which three of those injured and Mrs Tacon were travelling, was being driven by Mr Fergusson and was travelling to Bridge Pa aerodrome, where the party was to attend a dance at the club-house. F’ergusson’s car, a light model, skidded across the road and crashed into a fence. Taaffe’s car turned over down a low bank. Those injured were:— MISS ANNE TACON, aged 16, of Riverslea Road, Hastings, concussion and internal injuries; Condition serious. MISS JOAN KALE, aged 21, Queen Street East, Hastings, concussion, severe head lacerations, injuries to left leg and arm; con- ' dition serious. MR BRIAN FERGUSSON, aged 20, of 805 Avenue Road East, Hastings, lacerations and concussion; condition serious. MR GEORGE TAAFFE, Hastings, abrasions and shock; condition not serious. Dr E. McTavish, of Nelson, who was driving to Napier, came on the scene almost immediately and treated the injured, who were taken by ambulance to hospital.. .Mr- Taaffe received attention but was not admitted. Wing Commander Tacon recently returned to duty with the King’s Flight after visiting his parents..
