Westport Women’s Institutes

At the monthly meeting of the above on Tuesday there was a large attendance. The motto read by Miss R. Theobald was “Let us be done with fault finding and self seeking.’’ A new member, Mrs Webster, was welcomed. An appeal for assistance was received from the Community Centre. All members agreed this should receive immediate attention, and it was decided to open to the public on Friday, June 11, a display of art hand handwork done by members of the Institute. Included will be an exhibit of beautiful needlework of every description, and handwork executed entirely by Mrs Marionovitch. A member who had seen this clever work remarked that it was most exquisite and would be well worth seeing. It is hoped that the public will visit the display at the Community Centre. The Institute was asked by the Hospital Board to assist in recognising the good service that Dr F’oote has rendered Westport. This appeal was given whole-hearted support. One member said nothing could repay Dr Foote for all he has done, but the Institute was willing to support anything fitting to the occasion. A letter from the maker of “F’orm-U Dressmakers’ Models” stated these would render invaluable assistance to all dressmakers, could be made in about half an hour, and were quite reasonable in price. Several members availed themselves of this opportunity. Any desiring to do so should communicate with the secretary, Mrs Ness. A concert is to be held in July, when the cream of Institute talent will be to the fore in aid of the Community Centre. An invitation from the Granity Institute to its birthday was dealt with, and about 20 members stated their intention of attending. A notable item of the evening was the showing of several films by Mr C. Robertson, shoeing everyday happenings in and around Westport andjiohits of interest from outside places. One taken at the Mt. Harker icefield showed what fun can be had skating and skiing. The president, Mrs Farrell, thanked Mr Robertson for his kindness and he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competitions resulted as follows: Bouauet of paper flowers, Mrs Wheatley 1, Miss R. Theobald 2, Mrs Crase 3; plate of shortbread, Miss Theobald 1, Mrs M. Johns 2, Mrs Bruce 3; best bloom, Miss Theobald 1, Mrs W. Stowell 2. Mrs Crase 3. After the hostesses had served supper the singing of the National Anthem brought a very interesting evening to a close.
