HASTY DECISION BY FIRE BRIGADE TO RESIGN IN A BODY
WELLINGTON-. June 3. Because its engine was used to pump sewerage the Eastbourne Fire Brigade, who are volunteers, have resigned, with effect from to-morrow 11 The resignations were caused by the Eastbourne Borough Councils “cavalier treatment of the brigade, said a member of the volunteer service, Mr E. Blanche. He said the engine was taken without the knowledge or permission, of the brigade and was used to pump sewage and was damaged. The Mayor of Eastbourne (Mr- E. W. Wise) said the resignations had come as a complete surprise, and the brigade’s decision “leaves Eastbourne in a terrible predicament should a fire break out.” Mr Wise added that the engine was borrowed without the council’s authority by the borough foreman to clear a bad block in the main sewer, and it was most unfair to .blame the council for the situation.
