Britain to Use American Planes
LONDON, June 1. Britain is to abandon its policy of flying “all British” aircraft on her air trunk routes. American Constellation airlines bought from Irish Airlines, which has abandoned a projected trans-Atlantic service, are to tie used on the Australian route, and Hythe flying-boats will be withdrawn, probably towards the end of this year. It is expected that the British Government will buy D.C.4M airliners from Canada. They are known as the Canadair 4, and are of American design, but are being built in Cana-da under licence. They are powered by British Rolls Royce Merlin engines. A “Flying British” policy was followed to give Britain’s aircraft industry a chance to recover from its wartime preoccupation with military production. It has not been successful. It is thought unlikely that the “Fly British” policy will return before 1953.
