RELICENSING OF MOTOR VEHICLES IN GREYMOUTH

The relicensing of motor vehicles for the year 1948-49 has commenced at post offices throughout the Dominion. Licensing laoels are again being ..issued in lieu of new number plates. Fresh petrol coupons will be assigned to motor cars ana motorcycles which are relicensed for 19481949. As new number plates are not being issued, motorists must continue to display their 1946-47 plates (black figures on a mid-buff background) on their vehicles. The number of vehicles to be relicensed in the Greymouth postal district is 3650. The number for the Dominion totals 350,000. Now that the post office has commenced relicensing motorists can assist the de-, partment by making early application. The principal information required of vehicle owners on the application forms consists of the current plate number of the vehicle, its engine and chassis numbers and the class of the vehicle for third-party insurance purposes. The colour combination or the new licensing labels is black printing on a fine violet-red ground. The petrol coupons now on issue will become obsolete at the end of this month. The colours of the new coupons for use from July onwards are as follows: One gallon (for motor-cycles), burnt sienna;' two gallons (for private cars under 9.5 h.p.), buff tint; three gallons (for private cars from 9.5 h.p. to 14.5 h.p.), violet tint; four gallons (for private cars over 14.5 h.p.), blue tint.

The new stickers must be displayed on the left-hand side of the windscreen. If desired they may be affixed immediately. They must be exhibited on all vehicles by July 1. The work' is at present being undertaken at the motor registration counter of the chief post office inquiry office. Later this month a special office will be opened in a room in the court house..
