FRANZ JOSEF TEA ROOMS ARE OPENED
One of the most valuable amenities so far provided for the residents of the Waiho and surrounding districts, and visitors to the famous Franz Josef Glacier, is the combined tearooms and ice-cream parlour recently established by Mrs J. Sweeney. Last Wednesday afternoon a very happy gathering of some twenty-three of the local ladies assembled at the tearooms for an informal afternoon teaparty, to celebrate the occasion of the opening. Before proceeding indoors, the cheery group was photographed by the local photographer, Mr R. Warburton and then Mrs E. Gibb unveiled the sign-board of the “Franz Josef Tea-rooms.” A dainty afternoon tea was then served indoors, during which many plans were made for future meetings at this little rendezvous. A competition “Counting the Buttons,” conducted bv Mrs Gibb was won by Mrs Dave Graham. The judging of a further competition “The Name I Would Choose,” was left to Mrs Sweeney, the winner to be notified and receive an afternoon tea for herself and a friend at a later date. Mrs Gibb made a very appropriate speech, wishing Mrs Sweeney every success in her new venture, and assuring her of the unfailing patronage- and support of the local residents, and asked her to accept as a token of the esteem in which she is held, the small gifts which had been brought along. Mrs Sweeney suitably replied thanking her friends for their, kindness, and this concluded a very pleasant afternoon.
