POLICE MOBBED IN MELBOURNE WHEN ARRESTING PICKPOCKETS
(Rec. 8.30). MELBOURNE, April 17. A mob of two hundred brutally kicked and bashed a constable outside of the South Melbourne football ground when two plain clothes constables were endeavouring to arrest suspected pickpockets. Constable James Mcllwaine, aged 33, was treated later for lacerations and abrasions. The constables arrested two suspects when they were boarding a tram after an Australian League football match. The suspects shouted for help to the crowd who were leaving the gates. Immediately a crowd swarmed about the policemen, knocking Mcllwaine down, and helping one suspect to escape. Fighting his way to his feet, Mcllwaine saw one suspect board a city-bound tram. He gave chase, boarded the rear of the tram, and arrested the man when the tram reached the city.
