THIRD WORLD WAR MAY START IN PALESTINE!
Arab King Says Jews Have Russian Commanders
(Rec. 9.40). JERUSALEM, April 17. Russian commanders were leading some of the Jewish forces in Palestine, said King Abdullah, of TransJordan, at Amman, to-day. He said that Trans-Jordan would actively assist the Palestine Arabs.
The King declared: “The Palestine situation has become a Russo-Jewish menace to the whole Arab world. I am the hardest man in action, particularly when I smell the odour of Communism. I fear that shiploads of Jews and of Russians will enter Haifa, Tel Aviv, and Jaffa, when the British leave Palestine. You will have another Spain, with the AngloSaxons fighting the Russians. Then will come the Third World War”.
U.N.O. Assembly Depressed NEW YORK, April 17. The U.N.O. General Assembly’s special session on Palestine began in gloom. The Assembly elected Dr Jose Arce (Argentina) president for the session. Mr T. F. Tsiang (China) was second in the balloting and Sir Carl Berendsen (New Zealand) was tnird. The election of Senor Arce, who was supported by the Arab and Latin American States ,is regarded as a set-back for the big Powers, which are reported to have wanted M. Ssiang as president. M. Tsiang, was appointed chairman of the Political Committee, which will do most of the Assembly’s work on the Palestine issue. Senor Muniz (Brazil) the acting president, in opening, said the Palestine picture could hardly be more sombre. Fading chances of the Jews and Arabs accepting the Security Council’s truce plan had given the Assembly a “disheartening atmosphere.” The huge hall was less than halffilled as Senor Muniz spoke—many delegations were thinly represented, and the press gallery, which is normally packed for the opening sessions, was almost empty.
