CANBERRA, April 15,
The importation of 2000 used cars and trucks from France has been approved by the Australian Government. *A Melbourne firm has been given a permit to arrange for the imnort, which will cost about £1,000,000. Advice received by the Government indicates that there will be more trucks than cars in the consignment. The vehicles, which were manufactured for war purposes, are ito be reconditioned for sale in Australia. The firm intends to import 110,000 vehicles if possible. CANBERRA. April 15. Many negro boxers' who came to Australia were exploited by managers who remained in the United States, said the Prime Alinister of Australia (Mr Chifley) to-day. He intimated that no change in the dollar provisions affecting negro boxers was likely. He said that when the restrictions were first imposed he had been told that boxing in Australia would be ruined. This had not occurred. “The fact is that many negro boxers who come here are exploited,” he added. “They are dumped like so much baggage and the managers stay in the States collecting often 50 per cent, and never less than 33 per cent, of their earnings. Boxers can only take £lOOO in dollars out of the country, which means that after the manager has taken his cut, the boxer earns only £5OO. I cannot see that that amount, under the dollar restrictions, should be eased to help the managers to exploit the boxers.”
