Cows Repay Coats with More Milk
LONDON, April 14.
Mrs Barbara Woodhouse, who farms at Stoke Mandeville, Bucks, believes she has found how to abolish milk rationing. She puts coats on her cows, warm wool-lined coats for cold weather and cottons ones to keep the flies off during the summer. The result —more milk by two to three gallons daily per covv, and less food eaten. Thirteen Guernsey cows in this herd are now averaging five gallons daily, and their annual yields range from 1000 to 1400 gallons each, compared with a national average of about 550 gallons.
“Comfortable, warm cows give much more milk, and the warm coats save food that would otherwise be needed to keep up body temperatures,” said Mrs Woodhouse. “If only more farmers would do it we could get milk off the ration,” she said.
