Estates in Java to be Liquidated
BATAVIA, April 15.
The intention of the Netherlands East Indies Government to liquidate the private ownership of estates iri Java was announced in a statement issued to-day by the Dutch Information Service. It was clear that the maintenance of large private land ownership was inconsistent with the principles of democracy and self-government, said the statement.
The last statistics, published in 1941, showed that there were 119 private owners of estate properties in Java and Madura. The British Anglo-Dutch Plantation Company is one of the biggest freehold titleholders at present in Java. It has been impossible for a European to obtain a title to Indonesianheld land since the agrarian law was passed by the Dutch Parliament in 1870.
Privately-owned estates were graduallj? being reclaimed by the Netherlands East Indies Government before the war.
