English Seamen Intended to Desert
WELLINGTON, April 8 “It takes too long to get out to New Zealand legally,” said one of the four young Englishmen, each of whom was charged in the Magistrates Court to-day with deserting from the Arawa at Wellington on March 16. He had been asked by Mr A. M. Goulding, S.M., when he deserted. Accused added that he had not endeavoured to see the .immigration authorities in England because he had not. thought, it worthwhile. Another of the accused said he had attempted to get to Zealand through legal channels, but had been told he would have to. wait his turn at the end of a Jong waiting-list. He had taken a quicker method. “I suppose there is a great temptation for you to get out here m this way n said Mr Goulding in sentencing each of the accused, who all pleaded guilty, to one month s ircprisonment. “But you are all men of the sea and you know the consequences.”
