HORSE THIEF CAUGHT AFTER LONG SEARCH

WAIROA, April 7. Arrested at Blenheim, John Nelson Wells, barman, aged 35, of Hamilton, appeared in the Police Court, Wairoa on an eighteen months old charge of stealing a horse, valued at £lO, at Wairoa. ' It was stated that the delay in bringing the action was caused by difficulty in locating Wells. His coum sei submitted that the horse had been given to Wells as a gift, but the police prosecutor held that it had been merely lent, and that the case was a straight-forward one of theft. The Magistrate upheld the police view, convicting Wells and placing him on a year’s probation. He also ordered the payment of £lO to the owner of the horse.
