Decreases in criminal cases, but increases m summonses for gebt and the amounts claimed and in the number of cases before the Children’s Court are recorded for the first quarter of 1948 at Greymouth compared with the same period of 1917. Details of the business transacted m the court during the quarter, with cbmparisons with the corresponding period of 1947 shown in parentheses are as follows:— Civil: Plaints entered during quarter 102 (31); total amount sued tor £2549 3s (£749 12s 7d); cases disposed of during quarter 42 (161; total amount claimed £1787 16s 3d (£3Ol 16s 4d); total amount recovered £1694 0s Id. (£135 2s 3d). Criminal; Arrest cards: males 18 (20), females 2 (31; total 20 (23); summons cards: males 63 (91), females 3 (2), total 65 (95); cases tried in children’s court: 5 males (2 males). INCREASE IN FINES Fees and fines received in the Magistrate’s and Supreme courts during the year ending March 31 last, witlr comparisons with the previous year shown in parentheses were as follows:— . Magistrate’s Court:—Civil fees £344 Is (£lBO ss); criminal fees, £134 3s (£1)28 19s); lines £757 14s (£697 ss). Total. £1255 Is (£lOO6 9s).
