GREYMOUTH APPEAL FOR WORLD’S NEEDY CHILDREN
A nation-wide campaign to support the United Nations appeal for needy children in all parts of the world commenced on Tuesday, when a public meeting was convened in Greymcuth in the evening, by the Mayor, . Mr F. F. Boustridge, and it was decided to support the appeal, ‘while a working committee and an executive committee. which will appoint the various sub-commitees, were formed. The Mayor said that the meeting had been called at the express request of , the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, and fhe Leader of the Opposition, Mr Holland. All other boroughs were also holding meetings. The appeal, which would commence in May, would of necessity be a short one. “All donations will be acknowledged by an official receipt”, the Mayor continued, “and will be placed in a special account with the Bank of New Zealand. The names of all donors will be entered in a book compiled by the Government, and known as the ‘Book of Life’, which will later be forwarded to the United Nations as a testimony ’of New Zealand’s efforts in this measure”. Mr M. J. Fogarty moved that all present should be elected to the working committee, with power to add. This was seconded by Mrs Green and carried. The following were elected: Mesdames Boustridge. Fogarty. Pearson, Parfitt. 'O'Regan, Rowe, Longstaff, Walters, Evenden, Lane, Schultze. O. McLean, P. J. McLean, Green, and R. Stewart, Misses McKnight, Murphy, C. Brown and Stewart, Messrs Boustridge (chairman), Rowe (secretary), Denton (treasurer), Blackie, Ryan, Parkinson, Stiles, Fairmaid, Norrish, Fogarty, O. McLean, Bunt, O’Loughlin, the Rt. Rev. Monsignor J. Long, Rev. T. G. Campbell and the Rev. K. G. Aubrey. Those elected to the executive committee were the chairman, secretary, and treasurer, Mesdames Fogarty and Parfitt, Messrs H. Stiles, W. Parkinson, and Rev. K. G. Aubrey.
