HOKITIKA NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent) HOKITIKA, April 6. At the meeting of the Westland Acclimatisation Society the chairman submitted a full report on the Society’s two efforts to trap eels in the Mahinapua Creek. Both attempts failed, as floods in the creek carried away the traps. Very little migration of eels had taken place in the creek prior to April. The report is to be submitted to the Marine Department. The Secretary reported on the meeting with Major Yerex witli the three West Coast Societies to consider the appointment of a full time ranger for the district. The combined societies offered to contribute the sum of £250 towardrs the ranger’s salary. The proposal is to be submitted to the Minister of Internal Affairs by Major Yerex, who expressed pleasure at the wholehearted co-operation offered by the combined Societies.

The Department of Internal Affairs asked the Society’s help in recognising mallard, grey and spoonbill ducks which had been banded and released at Palmerston North. The aluminium bands are to be returned. The secretary was instructed to obtain slides to distribute to sportsmen to obtain blood smears for observation of bird malaria. Department notified that the shooting season would open on May 1 and close on May 30. Notice of motion was. given to fescind the mot.cn appearing on the Society’s books prohibiting shooting on Lake Mahinapua after noon on each day of tiie shooting season. A report on snigging operations in Sunny Bight being detrimental to spawning is to oe investigated. The report was highly satisfactory on the work of the full time i anger. Mr. H. V. Algar presided at the weekly meeting of the Westland Rugby Sub-Union held on Monday evening. The following senior matches were set down for Saturday, April 10: Star v. Excelsiors at Greymouth, at 2.45 p.m.; Kiwis v. St. Mary’s, at Cass Square, at 2.45 p.m. Referees are to be announced on Thursday. Junior clubs were granted permission to arrange junior trial matches on Saturday. Three applications for reinstatement to the code were recommended. The Convent School is to be asked to appoint a representative on the Junior Advisory Board. Mr. E. Olson is to attend‘to sets of flags for both fields. It was decided to arrange permanent ticket boxes at No. 1 and No. 2 gates to Cass Square. Mr. J. Henderson was appointed Union, representative on the Referees’ Appointment Board. It was resolved that clubs be asked to submit their recommendations as to whether they require one selector or three selectors for each grade, and to make their recommendations together with their nominations to the next meeting of the Sub-Union on Monday next. The Sub-Union decided to make all arrangements for visitins clubs to Greymouth during the senior grade competition. The West Coast Union is to Be asked to advise in regard to postponement of matches, and Mr. C. Schroder to be the local executive officer at .Hokitika. Cluh caretaking day. Saturday, April 10, is to be Kiwi Club. The Junior Advisorv Board met following the Union meeting. Weather conditions rapidly changed at Hokitika on Monday. Light rain commenced during the morning and throughout the day some heavy shower? fell. In the evening conffitions became worse, and till early morning the wind blew at hurricane force from the south-west, and, was accompanied by very heavy driving rain. Damage to telephone and power lines was caused. Conditions became very cold, and the air had quite a wintry feelffig.
