(Our Own correspondent) HoKlliivA, April 5 On Saturday local volunteer workers assembled at the old home of Mrs Barltrop in Hampden Street, to dismantle the house and secure windows, doors and iron for the nurses’ batch at Lake Kanieri. Mrs Baitrop donated the house to the nurses and the hand of workers soon had the building down. As a result of their efforts, the nurses will have much valuable building material for the batch, Mr J. J. Williams of Hokitika, leaves to-morrow morning en route to Australia. He will leave Auckland by flying boat and will be absent from New Zealand for a period of three months. Mr Williams is a native of Australia, and is on a visit to members or his family. He came to New Zealand in 1904. Mr T. Mitchell .postmaster at. Hokitika has received notice of his transfer to Gore. During his sojourn in Hokitika Mr Mitchell has taken a keen interest in the welfare of the town and district. A new laundry roller arrived at Westland Hospital ex the Kent from London. The new roller will be installed immediately. When completed, the laundry will be modern arm uu to date, and spec-aiiy equipped to cope with the work of the hospital and maternity hospital. Two bus loads of Hokitika baseball enthusiasts visited Westport on Saturday to try conclusions with the Westoort teams. The party returned on Sunday evening after an enjoyable trip. Miss Rene Jacobs and her orchestra travelled with the party and played for the ball in the evening. The best scores in the Stableford Bogey match played on Saturday were: H. Kortegast, 40 points, Balneaves 31, P. Kortegast 29. Black 28. Wells 26, Groufsky 25. The small motor-ship, Gael, hasbeen purchased by a syndicate m former servicemen and will be taken over about the middle of this month. She will be engaged chiefly in the Lyttelton-Wellington trade, taking in Nelson during the apple season. Captain J. F. Holm will be the Welling; ton manager of the syndicate, _ ana Mr H. L. Herdman has been appointed the Lyttelton agent. The Gael has for some years been engaged in the Hokitika- Wellington run. On occasions she has been on other coastal runs. The Gael (108 tons was built by G. Brown and Company, at Greenock, in 1903. . . Rugby football competitions will open in Hokitika next Saturday, the senior games in the afternoon, and lower grade games under the .Tumor Advisory Board, in the morning. It is expected that upwards of 300 school boys will take part in the matches in the morning. The junior grade competition will commence on April 17. Last Saturday the Royer "(Granity) team gave a fine exhibition here against Kiwis, winning by 38 points to nil. Qn the other ground, Celtic of Greymouth, defeated Excelsiors hv 15 points to 6. Both visiting teams played a high standard of football for opening games. A local syndicate proposes the raising oi £1,000,000 to set up near Hokitika a mill for the making ol newsprint and sulphite wrapping paper, from bush waste. About. 18 years ago a syndicate sent samples of local timber to Switzerland to be tried out. It, is stated a newsprint mill would employ 240 men to turn out 7,000 tons yearly. It is suggested that overseas capital might be obtained towards importing 2,500 tons of machinery. It is understood newsprint manufacture in the. North Island is also contemplated. The Government has been stated to have considered this in relation to the utilisation ’ of forests there. The local syndicate has sought a license, to which the Whakatane Coy., which produces about 13,000 tons of paper board and similar articles per annum, lodged objection, when the matter was before a tribunal set up by the Department of Industries and Commerce. The tribunal adjourned the matter for some months to enable further information to be obtained ______
