MARIST BEAT COBDEN IN SENIOR RESERVE

Playing on th ft Cobden Domain yesterday afternoon, the Marist senior reserve team defeated Cobsen senior reserve by 25 points to 11. Marist played solid, football and tne team comoination in the second naif made the side formidable opposition. Cobden on the other hand were a team without a Knowledge of eacn other and it was through fumbling that many “'sure” tries were lost. At the outset Cobden sizzled uno the Marist line and it was not long before an offside infringement gave. J. Davenport a kick at goal which however went outside the left post. After infield play in which the Marist backs were hard pressed to stave off the Cobden attacks Longley tor Cobden narrowly missed a try his effort finishing when he was rulled out side about a yard from the line. Another penalty by Davenport then missed the posts. At this stage J. Guy Marist’s left winger was showing up in the play. Repeated dashes down the line and centre as well as clever handling attracted him to the eye of the spectators and it was from Guy that A. Knapp went over to open the scoring. Hines converted the try and took the score the 5-0 in Marist’s favour.

After half-time, speed merchuiit Guy dashed along the line and alier eluding several would-be Cobden tacklers placed the leather behind the line for Hines to convert. Marist 10, Cobden 0. Shortly afterwards, Hines received from a melee and went over. He converted his own try and took the score to Marist 15, Cobden nil. Cobden’s scoreboard was opened by Roche who after taking the ball from a tussle about five yards out-side-stepped a couple of men and dived over for Davenport to convert. Marist 15, Cobden 5. At this stage Cobden was hammering at the Marist goal-line, but in vain. Several near tries were spoiled through fumbling and this is one of the points which will have to be cleared up for the team to function as well as it did last year. A forward rush which caught Marist napping gave G. Curtis the chance to make Cobden’s score 8. Devenport failed with the kick. Marist’s score was taken to 20 when M. Malone, a forward who was playing well all the time, seized me leather and tricked several Cobden pursuers. Hines concerted. The final score of the match went to A. Mooney, who intercepted a pass and galloped 50 yards with Davenport in full pursuit. Fie placed the ba 1 ! in a position where Hines could not have missed. The final score was: Marist 25, Cobden 11 Mr P. Sweetman was referee, and perhaps a pointer as to the enthusiasm in the game already this season was the amount of criticism he came in for from the side-line. It was Mr Sweetman’s prerogative yesterday that in almost whatever he did, as far as one side or the other was concerned he was incorrect.
