Indian Civil Service Strikers Arrested

CALCUTTA, April 2. Civil servants in Calcutta downed pens and began a hunger strike this morning in defiance of the warning by the Prime Minister of India (Pandit Nehru) that strikers would be dismissed. The police arrested 124 people and also cleared Government offices _of strikers who did not leave at closing time. . z The strikers downed pens against the retrenchment of the civil service without the provision of suitable alternative jobs. They are also seeking increased pay and allowances. NEW YORK STRIKE. NEW YORK. April 2. The Financial Workers’ Union today called out 200 employees of the two leading brokerage houses in support of the striking Stock Exchange workers. The walk-out may spread and tie up the entire financial district.
