Russians Warn Of The Use of Many Night Fighter Planes
(Rec. 10.30) LONDON, April 4 The Russians last night (Saturday) notified the Americans that unusually large numbers of Russian fighter aircraft would be on operations that night, and also possibly on the next night. The warning was given after American transport aircraft had been flying on the Corridor route all day, delivering passengers and supplies to Berlin.
Earlier there were conflicting reports and rumours, one of which was that Russian fighters had dived on British planes in the 20-mile-wid? corridor to Berlin. Allied officials made statements which showed that the situation between Russia and the Western Powers in Beilin has deteriorated but little.
General Clay categorically denied reports of incidents in volving Russian and Allied planes over Germany. He said there would be no ordered evacuation of the families of Americans working in Berlin. RUSSIAN MANOEUVRES IN PROSPECT The French-licensed newspaper, “Kurier” reported that Soviet occupation troops in Germany are preparing for very large-scale manoeuvres in the next few weeks. Reuter reports that fresh detachments of Russian troops have dug three deep trenches, each 10ft broad and 100 yards apart on the main road outside Eichenberg at the junction of the British and American zones.
People crossing from the Soviet zone reported increased activity by Soviet troops along the Anglo-Rus-sian zonal boundary and said that about 2500 fresh troops had arrived at the frontier to-day.
