SOVIET’S CONTROLS
MAY BE 10 IMPRESS THE GERMANS AND ITALIANS
(Received April 4, at 5.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 3. .. American troops, armed with tommy-guns, late on Friday night surrounded the German railway headquarters in the American sector at Berlin, and they refused t o allow any Russians to enter the building, which, though it is in the American sector, is by Allied agreement, under Russian control. It is learned authoritatively that the Russian officials in the building were told that they could leave, but could not return until further notice.
The United States authorities requested the Soviet authorities imine diatey to remove eight armed Russian sentries from the Russian railway headquarters, which American police have kept continuously cordoned since midnight last night. General Clay said that his troops would keep the buildingsurrounded as long as the Russians kept any guards there. He said: “We have never allowed the armed soldiers of other Powers in our sector.”
General Petroff, the Commander of Railways for the Russian zone, is also still in this building.' Colonel Frank Howley, the American Commandant in Berlin, has rejected a telephoned request from rhe Russian Commandant, General Kitikov, for the removal of the United States guards.
