Christchurch To Modernise Trams
CHRISTCHURCH, April 1. The Christchurch Tramway Board at a special meeting yesterday, carried a resolution empowering it to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for sanction to the borrowing of £1,350,000 in amounts as required for modernising its tramway system, in accoi dance with a report by the works and traffic committee. Moving the resolution, the chairman (Mr C. C. Holland) said it had been considered and passed at a ■previous meeting, but through an oversight, some of the necessary procedure had then been overlooked. The board should have advertised its Intention to consider the motion and given people an opportunity of objecting. The oversight htad now been remedied. One objection, had ben received added Mr'Holland, but it seemed to be quite an irrelevant one. Also on Mr Holland’s motion, the board decided to send a copy of the objection to the Government Loans Board. Mr H. Kitson suggested that Mr Holland should read the objections to the meeting. Mr Holland then read the letter, which was signed by Mr C. A. Chambers, of Riccarton. Mr Chambers contended that the tramway system should be abolished and a modern bus service introduced. The administration of the service should be in the hands of representatives of the local bodies in whose areas the service operated,'he added.
