GREYMOUTH CUSTOMS DECREASE IN PAST YEAR
Sales Tax And Beer Duty Drop Although the returns at the Greymouth office of the Customs Department for the month of March and for the first 1948 quarter show an increase above those for the same periods last year, the figures for the year ending March 31 were down by £16,544 on those for the preceding twelve months. The total for the 1947-48 period was £304,32'5, and that for the 1946-47 period £320,849. A decrease of about £5,000 in beer duty was one of the main features of the latest figures. However this was not the largest decrease. Another one was recorded in Sales Tax, in which section the revenue dropped from £112,420 to £88,323, a decrease of £24,097. A rise of more than £2.1,000 was in the past year recorded under the customs duty heading, the revenue being £101,449, as against £79,710 in the preceding year, while petrol tax at £39,305 was £5,874 more than it was in the: 1947-48 term. The table below shows the figures for the financial year ended March 31, 1948, and those for the year ended Marell 31, 1947:—
