School Closure At Auckland is Now Questioned
AUCKLAND, March 31.
Two children who were admitted to hospital for other conditions have been diagnosed as positive poliomyelitis cases. There have been two discharges, leaving the total number of positive cases in hospital 48. The closing of Auckland schools is seriously jeopardising the prospects of pupils in the higher forms in their studies for University Entrance and other scholarships; most secondary school principals consider that the sixth-formers, at least, should be allowed to return to school. This was pointed out to an interviewer by the headmaster of the Seddon Memorial Technical College, Mr H. M. Scott, who is chairman of the local advisory committee on correspondence courses, and the Rev. Brother Leonard headmaster of the Sacred Heart College, who is chairman of the Auckland Registered Schools Association. Both said they would like to see the schools reopened. Mr Scott said that at a recent meeting secondary school principals were most emphatic that the Government should now be urged to allow all pupils over 16 to return to school.
