Whisky Drinkers Change Habits
LONDON, March 30
Alarmed by the “threat” to Britain's drinking habits. Scottish whisky distillers are stepping up their efforts to stamp out the blacx market.
Some distillers fear that the 40 per cent, loss of supplies to the highprice market is diverting the ordinary drinker’s tas'te for whisky co rum and gin. Stronger measures being taken to stop the leak into the black market include: Boycotting wholesalers selling to known high-price retailers, and tracing back high-price whisky to its source and blacklisting offenders. Latest survey by trade investigators shows that the main offenders, apart from thieves, are: Mushroom wine firms selling whisky on the condition-of-sale basis. Licensees and hotel managers who-sell “quota” whisky to private customers for cash; holiday hotels and restaurants who sell their' quotas out of season. All these charge up to £5 a bottle.
