N.I. Catholic Clubs’ Competitions

MASTERTON, March 31

At the North Island Federation oi Catholic Clubs’ annual gathering r.t Masterton, which was attended oy representatives of Catholic clubs and societies from various parts of tne North Island, the Redwood Memorial Shield foi' sport and public speaking was retained by Masterton Catholic Club, the Catholic Students’ Guild of Victoria University College being runners-up. The debate was won by Messrs H. Judson and J; Ryan (Masterton), the oratory contest by Mr M. St. B. James (Hamilton), the elocution contest and impromptu speech by Mr K. E. O’Connor (Victoria University Catholic Students’ Guild), religious questions by Mr J. Phelan (Onslow), tennis by Mr W’. Hocquard (Victoria University), billiards by Mr T. Patete (Master ton ?, and table tennis by Mr P. Greenlees (Master ton).

DUNEDIN, March 31

Decided on The final day of the women’s singles tennis championship, the New Zealand University Tournament Shield for, 1948 was won .by Canterbury. Final points positions were: Canterbury 28'1, Otago 25, Auckland 211, Victoria 131. Shield and cup winners for the tournament were: —Athletic: Auckland; women’s athletics: Otago; basketball: Canterbury; boxing: Victoria: shooting: Otago; rowing: Auckland.
