WATERSIDERS ENTERTAIN 350 CHILDREN IN GREYMOUTH

As the annual picnic of the Greymouth branch of the New Zealand Watersiders’ Union could not be held this year, owing to the poliomyletis epedimic, a gala day for children was held yesterday at McGinley Park. There, were races for all of the children, numbering about 200 who attended which ice cream was served from the Municipal Band Hall, and sweets were also distributed. Officials of the union controlled the gathering. Later in the afternoon the children from the park gathered in the watersiders cafeteria in Richmond Quay, and with them went many other children who up to. that stage had been onlookers. In the cafeteria high tea was served to nearly 350 children, there being an ample supply of sweets, cakes, soft drinks and ice creams. The hall was decorated for the occasion and Union members and their wives were kept busy attending to the needs of many hungry appetites. Afternoon tea had earlier been served by the members of the union to their wives in the social hall. The usual picnic day holiday was observed yesterday, no work being done at the wharves. Most of the Union n limbers gathered at the cafeteria to watch the children’s party, and not a few of them joined in.
