BAN ON INDIAN MIGRANTS IS DENOUNCED

WASHINGTON, March 23 Sir C. P. Ramaswami Aiyar, a former. Premier of Travancore, who is making a lecture tour of the United States criticised here the attitude of other British Dominions towards Indians, particularly Indian immigrants. He was interviewed by a panel of Washington journalists in the presence of a fashionable audience. He complained that although India has attained independence as part of the British Commonwealth, other Dominions have failed to adopt the reciprocal attitude which might have been expected, He - particularly criticised South Africa and Australia, and said: “Indians are not welcome in many Dominions. South Africa does not want Indians. Australia is only lightly populated, and otters a splendid field for migration, but I Have seen no enthusiastic response by Australia to the possibility of Indians migrating there. New Zealand is almost the same. Canada is only slightly better. Indians would like to feel that if they are to be part of the British Commonwealth they will be accorded some reciprocity by the other Dominions.” SYDNEY, March 27.

The Port Kembla branch of the Ironworkers’ Union has decided to oppose a proposal by the Department of National Service to settle 400 Balts in hostels at Port Kembla and

emnloy them in the steel industry.

The union states that it is not satisfied that the Balts will mix properly with members of the union, because' most' of them are said to have been Fascist supporters and enemies of trade unions.

The union and the Illawarra Trades and Labour Council agree that displaced persons who have clean trade union and anti-Fascist records should be employed providing they are not installed in exclusive hostels.
