ATOM BOMBS TO SINK SUBMARINES
Fresh U.S. Test In The Pacific (Rec. 9.0). WASHINGTON, March 27. Informed sources believe that plans have been completed for the test of Atomic Bomb Six at Eniwetok, says the United Press. It is thought that the bomb will be placed underwater, and will be set. off anywhere from two thousand feet to one mile below the surface.
The United Press says: The conjecture is that modern German submarines may be used as guinea pigs, as the U.S. Navy wants to. know what it will take to sink these craft, of which Russia has some 250. The test is expected to supply 'answers that were not secured by the previous tests. ~ .
NEW YORK, March 26 A World Telegram report from Washington says that four more submarines supposedly Russian—were added to-day to the number of undersea craft already announced officially as having been sighted off American shores in the Pacific. The World Telegram report adds: “This would place the number of definitely sighted submarines at seven. The new figures came from a reliable source, which also disclosed that foreign submarines —presumably of the Red Fleet—have been operating near American bases in the Pacific for about a year.” U.S. Problem To Guard Atomic Secrets in Pacific (Rec. 8.30) NEW YORK, March 27 A United Press correspondent at Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands, says: “Kwajalein, which is the gateway to the atomic tests at Eniwetok, four hundred miles southward, and a stopping point for army and navy transport planes crossing the Pacific, is the hottest security problem that the United States has. The Counter Intelligence interviews every passenger, even if he is only stretching his legs while a- plane refuels, and warns him that the Atomic Engery Act provides death for anyone betraying the atom secret.
