Rehabilitation Aid for Men and Women Remaining in Forces

Men and women who served with the armed forces during the war and have, since taken up the Army. Navy or Air Farce as a career can still apply for rehabilitation assistance suitable to their needs and warranted by their war-time service, says the Minister of Rehabilitation, the Hon. C. F. Skinner. In the main, assistance would be lor housing t;r for the furtherance of education.

For men - who arc eligible for rehabilitation aid, loans to purchase or build homes of their own and loans to buy furniture are available. Such servicemen may also be considered for inclusion in the preferential allocation of State rental houses. Educational assistance can be made available, providing the course proposed is shown to be in the interests of the serviceman or woman concerned. Necessarily, it would be of a part-time nature only. In the • •ase ol members of the Permanent Forces it would be to assist ' in improving their prospects in the particular branch of the service in which they were engaged. With members of lhe temporary staff, educational aid would be to help them to establish themselves more securely in civilian life after leaving the forces. There are two main groups affected. First are those who have seen service before March. 31. 1946, and whose service before that date was war-time. Secondly are those who«e service has been in an occupation force, such as “J” Force. In the latter case twelve months have to be served as a member of an occupation force before an applicant can be regarded as eligible for assistance other than necessary trade and occupational training.
