Mallalieu (Labour) 27,333 Mr Anthony Fell (Conser.) 22,746 Majority 4,587 The by-election was caused by the resignation of Mr Tom Williamson (Labour). Mr Williamson’s majority in a straight light at tiie general election was 8104.
